Your customers aren’t Googling anymore. Now what?
Product discovery has shifted from Google’s search box to social feeds and AI answers. Google now surfaces social posts in Search and Discover, AI Overviews quote Reddit and forums directly, and at Cannes Lions 2026 Google, TikTok and Reddit each shipped tools that make creator and community content the unit of discovery. For SA brands the move is not to abandon SEO, it is to treat creator and community content as part of your search strategy.
Social search just stopped being a side channel. With Google pulling social posts into its results, AI Overviews quoting Reddit, and TikTok and Reddit launching new discovery tools at Cannes Lions 2026, product discovery has moved. Here is what changed, and the three things to fix in your brief this week.

TL;DR: Quick answer
Discovery has shifted from a Google search box to social feeds and AI answers. Google now surfaces social posts in Search and Discover, AI Overviews quote Reddit and forums directly, and at Cannes Lions 2026 Google, TikTok and Reddit each shipped tools that make creator and community content the unit of discovery. For South African brands the move is not to abandon SEO, it is to treat creator and community content as part of your search strategy, brief for what people actually search, and check what Reddit already says about your category before your next campaign.
Key takeaways
- Zero-click search has crossed the halfway mark, so a Google-first, website-traffic strategy now misses most discovery moments.
- Google Search Profiles, launched 4 June 2026, give large creators a Google-hosted page that pulls in their social posts, currently US-only.
- AI Overviews now quote Reddit, forums and social posts with attribution, so community conversation feeds your search visibility.
- TikTok’s Symphony Agent and Reddit’s new ad tools, both from Cannes Lions 2026, turn existing organic and community content into campaign assets.
- The brief shift that wins: stop asking “what should we say?” and start asking “what is our customer already searching?”
What actually changed
The search box stopped being the front door. For two decades the job was simple: write a page, rank it on Google, wait for the click. That model now leaks at both ends. At the top, people start somewhere else, on TikTok, on YouTube, inside ChatGPT. At the bottom, even when they do search Google, they often get the answer without leaving the results page.
The numbers are blunt. Zero-click searches passed the halfway mark in 2026, reaching 58.5% in the US and 59.7% in the EU by the first quarter. Google’s own research has acknowledged that roughly 40% of Gen Z begin product and information searches on TikTok or Instagram rather than Google. And at Cannes Lions in June, Reddit presented research showing that nearly half of shoppers now check Reddit to verify an AI-generated product recommendation before they buy.
of US searches now end without a click, with the EU close behind at 59.7%. Zero-click search has crossed the halfway mark, so a Google-first, website-traffic strategy now misses most discovery moments.
Source: SparkToro / Datos, Q1 2026Put those together and the conclusion is uncomfortable for any brand whose entire content plan is built around website traffic. The attention has moved to feeds, communities and AI answers. The budget needs to follow it. This is the same shift we cover in will AI search kill SEO, and it is why a modern plan blends classic search with AI search optimisation.
Stop doing SEO only for your website. Start structuring content like a publisher, optimised for social and AI search, not just for the click. Product discovery in 2026 spans Google, social feeds and AI answers, so visibility now means appearing in AI Overviews, Discover and community conversation, not only in the ten blue links.
How Google, and especially AI, now features social posts in search
This is the part most brands have missed, so it deserves its own section. Google has spent 2026 actively pulling social and community content into its own surfaces, in three distinct ways.
1. AI Overviews now quote Reddit, forums and social posts directly
On 6 May 2026 Google updated AI Overviews and AI Mode to show what it calls Community Perspectives: direct quotes lifted from Reddit threads, niche forums and social media posts, shown inside the AI answer with attribution to the username or community. Google stated the rationale plainly, that for many searches people increasingly want advice from others. The same update added inline links placed next to the relevant text and labels that flag firsthand or expert sources.
This is not occasional. Analyses through 2026 found Reddit appearing in roughly a fifth of Google AI Overviews, and when Google cites Reddit it usually does so alongside YouTube, Quora, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, treating the social web as the ambient conversation around a topic. Critically, ranking in the traditional top ten is a weak predictor of being cited: one early-2026 study found only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews ranked in the organic top ten. Structure and substance matter more than position, which is exactly what answer engine optimisation is built to deliver. For the practical version, see how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
2. Social posts now appear inside Google Discover, with a Follow button
Since September 2025, posts from X, Instagram and YouTube Shorts began appearing inside the Discover feed alongside articles, each with a Follow button. Discover has quietly grown into a major channel in its own right, driving a large share of Google’s referrals to publishers. For brands, Discover is now a place your social content can surface to people who never typed a query at all.
3. Google Search Profiles give creators a Google-hosted page of social content
On 4 June 2026 Google launched Search Profiles, a claimable page inside Google Search and Discover that aggregates a creator’s latest videos, articles and social posts in one place, with that Follow button baked in. When someone searches a creator’s name, the profile can appear, and following it routes their content into the user’s Discover feed. Claiming a profile can also trigger or enrich a Knowledge Panel.
The catch matters for South Africa: at launch it is US-only and gated behind real follower thresholds, at least 100,000 on YouTube, Instagram or X, or 300,000 on TikTok, and the holder must be 18 or older. Google says it plans to expand worldwide but has given no date. Google has also been clear that a Search Profile does not directly boost ranking; the value is presence and a direct, subscribed audience inside Google’s own product. The deeper play, building the entity signals that earn a Knowledge Panel and AI citations, is what generative engine optimisation sets up, and you can read the SA-specific take in what is generative engine optimisation.
| Feature | What it does | Live for SA brands? |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overviews Community Perspectives | Quotes Reddit, forums and social posts inside AI answers, with attribution | Yes, AI Overviews are rolling out in SA results |
| Discover social posts + Follow | Surfaces X, Instagram and YouTube Shorts in the Discover feed | Yes, via Discover |
| Search Profiles | Google-hosted creator page aggregating social content | Not yet, US-only at launch |
The takeaway is simple. Your social and community content is no longer walled off from Google. It is increasingly the content Google shows, quotes and recommends. That changes what a content strategy has to cover.
Three platforms rewrote the rules at Cannes Lions 2026
Within a single week in June, three platforms shipped tools that all point the same direction: discovery is moving into feeds and communities, and the platforms want to own the loop from discovery to purchase. The announcements came from Google, TikTok and Reddit within days of each other.
Google: Search Profiles
What it does: Verified creators and publishers get a claimable profile inside Google Search and Discover that pulls their YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and X content into Google’s own results.
Why Google did it: It is losing the start of the search journey to social apps and AI, and is fighting back by drawing social content, and a direct follow relationship, into its ecosystem.
For SA brands: Even before profiles reach South Africa, the signal is clear. Creator partnerships now influence how you appear on Google, not only on social. Brief creators for both audiences, and build the following that will qualify you when the feature lands here. See our take on influencer marketing.
TikTok: Symphony Agent
What it does: An agentic AI inside TikTok’s Content Suite. Its AI Search lets you describe a campaign need in plain language and surfaces matching high-performing organic creator videos, by hashtag, location or prompt, instead of manual hashtag guessing. Announced 22 June 2026.
Why TikTok did it: It compresses the funnel inside one platform: AI finds the right organic content, the brand authorises it, and paid amplification scales it.
For SA brands: Your best ad asset may already exist as an organic creator video. The job is to find it and boost it, not always to shoot something new. If TikTok is new territory, start with TikTok for business in South Africa.
Reddit: Community Intelligence
What it does: A set of AI ad tools built on Reddit’s 25 billion-plus posts and comments, launched 22 June 2026. It includes a free-form ad generator that drafts ads from your site and relevant Reddit discussion, tailored creative that picks the right communities, and Redditor Highlights, which builds real upvoted community posts into ads. Reddit reports a 10.7% average lift in click-through for awareness campaigns using highlights.
The stat behind it: Nearly half of shoppers check Reddit to verify an AI-generated product recommendation before buying. Reddit is now a verification and conversion layer, not just a forum.
For SA brands: Find the threads where people already discuss your category. The upvoted comments are the most trusted copy your brand has, and you did not write a word of it. A structured social listening process turns that into a repeatable input.
One honest caveat on the Reddit tools: they are not literally “turn an upvoted comment into a search ad” in the way some early coverage framed it. They use community conversation to generate and target ads. The strategic point holds either way: authentic community language now outperforms polished brand copy, and the platforms are building tools to put that language to work.
What this means for South African brands
For South African brands the immediate impact is that a Google-only, website-only strategy now covers a shrinking slice of how people actually discover you. Here is what changes in practice.
Impact 1: Creator content is now part of your Google strategy
With AI Overviews quoting social content and Discover surfacing it, a creator video or a Reddit thread about your brand can influence what people see on Google, not just on the platform it lives on. You cannot claim a Search Profile in SA yet, but the underlying behaviour, Google rewarding firsthand social content, is already live in your results.
Impact 2: YouTube is your most underrated search engine
Long-form creator reviews on YouTube index on Google and are cited heavily by AI answers, and they drive considered purchases. YouTube’s share of AI citations climbed sharply through 2026, well ahead of other social platforms. Most South African brands ignore YouTube entirely, which makes it an open lane. Our guide to YouTube marketing in South Africa covers where to start.
Impact 3: Reddit is a pre-purchase checkpoint, whether you participate or not
If your category exists, and it does, there are threads where people verify recommendations about it right now. AI Overviews and ChatGPT both pull from those threads, so the same content that shapes a Reddit decision can shape an AI answer. We unpack the mechanics in getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews. The non-obvious implication most coverage misses: your absence from those conversations is itself a signal, and AI will happily summarise a thread that has no input from you.
Three things to change in your brief this week
Here are three concrete shifts, ordered by how fast you can act on them.
1. Brief for search intent, not brand messaging
What question is your customer typing into TikTok or YouTube? The creator’s opening line should answer it directly. “Is [product] worth it?” and “best [category] in South Africa” are search queries. Brief for those, not for a tagline. The platforms’ own AI now matches content to real-world questions, so the closer your hook sits to how people actually ask, the more discoverable it is.
2. Treat creator content as part of your SEO, not a separate silo
Because social content now surfaces in Google and feeds AI answers, a creator video about your brand is a search asset. Repurpose strong social content onto your own site with proper context and schema markup so it is crawlable, track which content shows up in Google and AI results, and commission with both the platform and Google in mind. Our AI SEO service is built around exactly this overlap.
3. Add a Reddit and community audit to your campaign pre-flight
Before the next campaign launches, read the threads where your category is discussed. Know what the upvoted comments say. That language is your most trusted, free copy, and it tells you exactly what objections and questions the campaign needs to answer.
Do not overreact
- Do not abandon SEO. Google’s AI features run on core Search ranking, so technical fundamentals still decide whether you get cited anywhere.
- Do not chase a Search Profile from South Africa yet. Build the following and entity signals now, claim the profile when it arrives.
- Do not buy “AI formatting” tricks. There is no llms.txt or content-chunking shortcut; substance and structure win.
The bigger picture
All of this is one trend wearing three logos. Discovery, consideration and conversion are collapsing into the same environment, the feed, the community, the AI answer. Google, TikTok and Reddit are each racing to own that collapsed funnel, and each is doing it by making social and community content the unit of discovery rather than the website link.
The brands that win the next two years are not the ones with the cleverest tagline. They are the ones that answer a different question. Not “what should we say about the product?” but “what is our customer already searching, and where?” Get that brief right and the content, the platform and the AI answer start working together. Get it wrong and you will keep optimising a website that fewer and fewer people ever reach.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO dead in 2026?
No. SEO is changing shape, not disappearing. The same fundamentals that rank a page now decide whether AI Overviews and AI Mode cite it, because Google’s AI features run on core Search ranking. What is shrinking is the click. The fix is to keep your site technically sound while building visibility on the platforms where discovery now starts.
Can South African businesses get a Google Search Profile?
Not yet. At launch on 4 June 2026, Search Profiles are US-only and require at least 100,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram or X, or 300,000 on TikTok. Outside the US the claim page shows a not-available message. Google plans to expand, with no date confirmed. Build the following and entity signals now so you are ready.
Why are AI Overviews quoting Reddit and social posts?
On 6 May 2026 Google added Community Perspectives to AI Overviews and AI Mode: direct quotes from Reddit, forums and social posts, attributed to the username or community. Google did it because people increasingly want firsthand experience over marketing, and many already add the word Reddit to their searches.
